What they do

The Global Mangrove Alliance is a coalition of over 30 organizations tracking mangrove conservation and restoration worldwide. They maintain the Global Mangrove Watch platform, providing satellite-based monitoring of mangrove extent, loss, and recovery across all tropical and subtropical coastlines. The Alliance advocates for mangrove inclusion in national climate commitments (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and coordinates restoration efforts across member organizations.

Why they matter

Mangroves are among the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth, sequestering 6-8 tCO2/ha/yr (4-10x terrestrial forests), yet only 2.1% of climate finance reaches coastal ecosystems. The Alliance's monitoring data has been instrumental in getting more countries to include mangroves in their Paris Agreement NDCs. Their work makes the economic case clear: mangroves provide $65 billion/yr in storm protection, support 80% of global fish catches at some life stage, and offer restoration costs as low as $290/ha.

How to support

Explore the Global Mangrove Watch platform to understand mangrove status in your region. Support member organizations working on local restoration. Advocate for mangrove inclusion in your country's climate commitments. Share their data with policymakers and journalists.

Key project to explore

The Global Mangrove Watch platform, providing near-real-time satellite monitoring of mangrove ecosystems in 120+ countries. The platform detected a slowdown in global mangrove loss since 2016, but identified critical hotspots in Southeast Asia and West Africa requiring urgent intervention.
