What they do

REGUA (Reserva Ecologica de Guapiacu) is a private reserve in Rio de Janeiro state protecting and restoring Atlantic Forest, one of the world's most threatened biomes. The reserve combines conservation, reforestation, wetland restoration, and community engagement. Over 600,000 native trees have been planted. Scientific research programs monitor biodiversity recovery across restored and primary forest areas.

Why they matter

The Atlantic Forest has been reduced to less than 15% of its original extent, making it more endangered than the Amazon. REGUA demonstrates that private reserves can meaningfully contribute to biome restoration. Their reforestation of 600,000+ native trees is rebuilding forest connectivity between fragments, enabling wildlife movement and genetic exchange. The adjacent wetland restoration has attracted species not seen in the region for decades.

How to support

Visit REGUA for birdwatching and ecotourism (the reserve is a premier birding destination). Donate to fund continued tree planting and wetland restoration. Research partnerships available for conservation biologists.

Key project to explore

The wetland restoration project recreated 14 hectares of wetland habitat that had been drained for cattle pasture, attracting bird and amphibian species not recorded in the region for decades.
