What they do

Mission Blue, led by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, establishes Hope Spots: special places critical to ocean health that need and deserve protection. The network of 150+ Hope Spots covers ecologically significant areas across all ocean basins. Mission Blue combines exploration, research, film, and advocacy to build public support for marine protection.

Why they matter

Dr. Sylvia Earle is the most recognized oceanographer alive, and her voice gives Mission Blue unparalleled credibility and media access. Hope Spots serve a strategic function: by identifying and publicizing critical marine areas before they receive formal protection, Mission Blue builds the public and political will needed for MPA designation. Several Hope Spots have subsequently been designated as formal protected areas by national governments.
