What they do
TerraCycle operates recycling programs for traditionally non-recyclable waste streams: chip bags, coffee capsules, beauty product containers, cigarette butts, and more. Their free programs are funded by brands (who pay for the recycling of their packaging). The Loop platform offers reusable packaging for consumer products from major brands (Haagen-Dazs, Tide, Pantene).
Why they matter
TerraCycle addresses the recycling gap: the vast majority of consumer packaging is technically recyclable but not accepted by municipal recycling programs because the economics do not work. By having brands fund the recycling of their own packaging, TerraCycle creates the economic incentive that municipal systems lack. The Loop platform goes further, replacing single-use packaging entirely with reusable containers that are returned, cleaned, and refilled.
