What they do
Plastic Bank operates collection centers in developing countries where community members exchange collected plastic for money, goods, or services. The collected plastic is recycled into Social Plastic, which brands purchase at a premium for their packaging. Collection centers operate in Haiti, Indonesia, Philippines, Brazil, Egypt, and Cameroon. Collectors use a blockchain-verified app to track their contributions.
Why they matter
Plastic Bank solves two problems simultaneously: ocean plastic pollution and poverty. In coastal developing countries, plastic waste litters beaches and waterways because there is no economic incentive to collect it. Plastic Bank creates that incentive. By paying above-market rates for collected plastic, they turn waste into a livelihood for thousands of collectors while diverting millions of kilograms from ocean pathways. The Social Plastic brand allows consumer companies to close the loop.
How to support
Purchase products from brands using Social Plastic (check their partners list). Corporate partnerships available for integrating Social Plastic into packaging. Donations fund new collection center establishment.
Key project to explore
The blockchain-verified collection platform tracks every kilogram of plastic from collector to recycling facility, providing full traceability and ensuring collectors receive fair payment.
